Erin Gish, a student at Oldenburg Academy, and Allen Meyers, a Batesville High School student, were two of a select group who attended the Molecular Medicine In Action (MMIA) program at Indiana University School of Medicine.
This year 50 of Indiana's best high school science students were selected – from about 160 applicants – for the two-day program, during which they worked alongside top research scientists learning hands-on laboratory techniques used in modern biomedical research.
Gish and Meyers, along with the other students in this year's program, isolated DNA in test tubes, stained chromosomes in order to identify mutations, learned about issues in bioethics and practiced techniques for inserting genes into cells, among other activities. Program director Mark Kelly, Ph.D., associate director of the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research, notes that it's hoped that the Molecular Medicine In Action Program will get students excited about science careers and demonstrate that they can pursue those careers in Indiana.
The Molecular Medicine In Action program seeks to get students enthused about science and inspire them to pursue careers in that field. Also, MMIA organizers hope to raise awareness of areas of excellence at Riley Hospital for Children and IU School of Medicine, and increase interaction between the medical school and Indiana's secondary schools and teachers.
"Our goal is to share the excitement of what cutting edge, state-of-the-art science promises," says Kelly, the Jonathan and Jennifer Simmons Professor of Pediatrics and associate director of basic research at the Indiana University Cancer Center.
"We merely loan the student participants the resources to learn – they provide the vision."
