Oldenburg Academy of the Immaculate Conception seniors were all smiles when they entered the Sisters of St. Francis Chapel May 30 for their graduation ceremony as cameras flashed from all directions. Quoting a verse from the class song, valedictorian Olivia Eckstein told fellow students to “‘live your life with no regrets’ .... There is no doubt in my mind that each of us will succeed in the path we choose ..... Any way you look at it, our class is awesome.” Salutatorian Jason Strasemeier stated, “We won’t forget all the lessons we’ve learned through our days in high school .... (and) we’ve made friends we won’t forget.” He also offered words of wisdom: “Each day we are given a gift ..... Go through life with a smile because life is not worth going through with a frown.” OA President Sister Therese Gillman had the seniors ponder two questions, which she hoped would be “the hallmark of every decision you make .... How can you be Christ to others, and at difficult times, how can you let others be Christ to you?” Prior to, during and after the hour-and-a-half ceremony, various emotions were being felt by all. Diane Quiroz, Sunman, announced, “It’s exciting. My oldest daughter (Olivia) is graduating .... I hope that no matter what, she keeps God first. Everything else will fall into place.” Her husband, Pablo Quiroz, emphasized, “She’s (Olivia) done great in this high school. Her first step is done .... (but) keep going all the way with your education.” Nancy Fahringer, Bright, was crying because “my baby of eight is graduating .... She (Elise) is going to Spain for the summer” and will attend Ohio Dominican in the fall. “I want her to keep her faith. That’s a lifelong thing .... no matter what else, you have that.” Jean Stacy, Greensburg, said she wants son Trevor to “work hard, but have fun.” Margie Eckstein, Sunman, revealed that daughter Olivia wants to become a doctor. “I hope she shoots for the stars .... and never gives up.” Jackie Wilhelm, Oldenburg, was excited and happy for son Alex. “I hope he keeps doing what he’s doing .... and hope he can achieve his dreams.” Her husband Mike added, “I hope he does the right things.” Julie Strasemeier, Moores Hill, commented that she was “happy and overwhelmed with joy” for son Jason. “I hope he continues to grow and learn, keeps his faith and enjoys life.” Principal Bettina Rose introduced the seniors as guidance counselor Margaret Milne handed each a daisy, the class flower, and Gillman presented each with a diploma. As class President Trevor Stacy led the turning of the tassels, the audience responded with loud applause. Following the Mass, graduate Olivia Quiroz remarked, “I’m thankful it’s over .... and ready to get out of this gown.” Clara Suding was ecstatic and wondered, “What am I going to do on Monday” now that school’s over? Andrew Kolb was “glad to be moving on.”
