Many holiday events are free

Area residents will be as jolly as St. Nick after going to one or more holiday activities. In chronological order:

The Metamora Christmas Walk is on four weekends Nov. 27-Dec. 20: Fridays and Saturdays, noon-9:30 p.m.; Sundays, noon-5 p.m. Tourists will marvel at holiday decorations, strolling carolers, photos with Santa and the Whitewater Canal State Historic Site Grist Mill.

The Christmas Express to Metamora from Conners-ville, operated by the White-water Valley Railroad, has three Saturday trips departing at 4 p.m. with 3.25-hour layovers at the quaint village’s walk Nov. 28, Dec. 5 and Dec. 12. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children 2-12. Reservations: www.whitewatervalleyrr.org or 765-825-2054.

The Weberding Christmas display lighting is one Batesville holiday tradition many anticipate. The merriment takes place Sunday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m. at 1230 State Road 46 E.

About 35 Dance Studio students who range in age from 3-19 will perform Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Batesville High School auditorium. In “Home for Christmas,” with music by Johnny Mathis, school director Lydia Woodward has choreographed one modern, one musical theater, one jazz and four ballet dances. Free reservations: 932-2046.

A Holiday Lunch at Ertel Cellars Winery Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 12:15 p.m. will make Christmas special for Live Y’ers 50 and over. Community members may attend the YMCA event. Reservations by Dec. 1 at 6 p.m.: Cathy Sullivan, 934-6006.

Eagle Fire Co., Oldenburg, will host an open house and Visit with Santa Friday, Dec. 4, from 6-8 p.m. Refreshments and door prizes will delight.

A home and business decorating contest is one highlight of the Friendship Christmas Walk Friday-Saturday, Dec. 4-5, from 6-10 p.m. sponsored by the village’s association. Santa and strolling carolers, crafts, a petting zoo, bonfire and street vendors will be other draws. Info: 812-667-2337.

“Christmas Belles” is a wacky comedy starring Batesville, Sunman and Greensburg actors. The Tree County Players production takes place in the St. Mary's School gym, Greensburg, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4-5, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. Tickets at $10 are available at the door. Holiday Under the Spires in Oldenburg is an old-time tradition Saturday, Dec 5.

A free Gingerbread House Workshop is slated for Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m.-noon at the Laurel library. Reservations: 765-698-2582.

Children will enjoy Visits with Santa in his Batesville Shopping Village workshop on three Saturdays: Dec. 5 and Dec. 19 from 10 a.m.-noon and Dec. 12 from noon-2 p.m.

Santa arrives on an Osgood fire truck at Christmas Walk, the holiday celebration at Ripley County Fairgrounds Park, Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 5-6, from 6-8 p.m. Family names and needs can be chosen from the Angels of Giving tree. Face painting and supper fare for sale plus free carriage rides, hot chocolate and cookies and light displays round out the fun.

St. Louis School eighth-graders host a whole hog Breakfast with Santa Sunday, Dec. 6, from 7 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Freewill offering proceeds will support their Chicago trip.

“A Christmas Carol” will be brought to the Franklin County High School auditorium. Brookville, Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. by the Franklin County Arts Council. The New York City-based Theatre-works USA production is back by popular demand after last year’s performance. Tickets at $10 for adults and $5 for children 2-12 can be obtained at FCN Bank, Brookville, or the door.

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, will be discussed and attendees will play reindeer games at Family Reading Nights Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Brookville library and Thursday, Dec. 17, at 6 p.m. at the Laurel library.

Judges will determine the prize winner at the Original Gingerbread House Contest for creations made at home Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 6 p.m. at the Brookville library.

A Holiday Concert by the U.S. Air Force Band of Flight will wow listeners Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. at the FCHS auditorium. Free tickets may be obtained from Nancy Pflum at FCN Bank, Brookville.

Holiday Fun is on tap Thursday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. at the Brookville library when Heidi Reuss and Faye Harsh present homemade gift and goody ideas for friends, neighbors and teachers.

Santa is the special guest at Batesville Memorial Public Library’s Christmas Party for preschoolers through third-graders Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. Crafts and treats are part of the free program. Info: 934-4706.

A Very Merry Literary Christmas Dinner Program is Friday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m. at the Ohio County Historical Museum, 212 S. Walnut St., Rising Sun. Storyteller Sharon Kirk Clifton will lead diners through meager, scantily furnished lodgings into a magical forest or beside an empty manger. Dinner program cost is $15; 7:30 p.m. program-only cost is $5. Reservations: 812-438-4915.

Luminarias light the way to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Morris, where parish children portray the Nativity Friday- Saturday, Dec. 11-12, from 4-9 p.m. Live animals are near the tented, outdoors manger and free refreshments are inside the parish hall, with live music at both places.

Christmas for the Birds is Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 a.m.-noon at the Lake Santee Community Room. Kids accompanied by adults may make winter feeding treats for their feathered friends. Ornament making is part of a Holiday Story Time for toddlers Monday, Dec. 14, at 10 a.m. at the Brookville library.

Rural Alliance for the Arts presents the Nebraska Theatre Caravan production of “A Christmas Carol” Monday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. at the BHS auditorium. “It’s very professional, very good and we’re fortunate to offer it to southeast Indiana,” says RAA President Lori Feldbauer. Children in grades K-4 can visit Santa’s Workshop Monday, Dec. 21, from 10 a.m.-noon at the Brookville library and 2-4 p.m. at the Laurel library. While kids are making parents’ gifts, watching a Christmas movie and munching on treats, their parents can prepare for the holiday at home. Reservations: 765-647-4031.

Deck the Halls is the theme when attendees make ornaments Tuesday, Dec. 22, from 10 a.m.-noon at the Brookville library and 2-4 p.m. at the Laurel library.

A live cow, donkey and several sheep plus 20 church members gather for the 42nd free New Point Christian Church Live Nativity Dec. 22-24 from 7-9 p.m. on State Road 46. Treats for all and small gifts for kids are distributed to spectators on foot or in vehicles that pass by.

The Sisters of St. Francis throw open the Oldenburg convent doors to welcome visitors during free Christmas Tours Sunday, Dec. 27, from 6-8 p.m. On display will be a tree boasting nature ornaments and decorations of various themes. Two chime choirs will perform and refreshments are offered.
