SDCSC trustees approve league

On Nov. 12, Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corp. trustees discussed a proposal to replace the corporation’s current youth baseball/softball recreation program with the Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken Baseball/Slow Pitch Softball program.

Coordinator Dennis Siebert explained the league for boys and girls ages 4-18 residing within the school district.

It will be a part of the Sunman-Dearborn Youth Athletic Association.

The fees are $50 per player, which will be used to purchase a team cap and jersey that will be kept by the player at the end of each season. The player fee, along with other money raised by the organization, will be used to pay for such items as equipment, umpires, field maintenance and improvement and accident and liability insurance.

“We’ll looking at multiple grant programs .... We’re fortunate to have a former Cincinnati Reds baseball player (Brian Koelling) in our group,” the coordinator revealed.

Youth will participate in about 12 games throughout the season on SDCSC fields, Siebert noted.

“I think they’ve put together a plan that’s very workable,” announced business manager Kris Wilson.

Superintendent Dr. Jeff Hendrix expressed concern over possible destruction of the fields. “We would be responsible for any damage .... Our intention is to improve the fields,” Siebert said.

“If you are doing improvements, that’s great,” the superintendent noted.

Trustees unanimously agreed to support the program and allow them to use the fields.
