OA girls race to sectional title

BATESVILLE — There was not much doubt going in who would win the girls cross country sectional title.

The Oldenburg Academy Lady Twisters have dominated the area all season and Tuesday night at South Dearborn High School was not much different.

The Lady Twisters filled the top three individual spots and added the sixth position en route to a team score of 46 points.

Oldenburg’s final score was 26 better than the second place Batesville Lady Bulldogs. South Dearborn (107), East Central (108) and Greensburg (115) rounded out the top five.

Oldenburg Academy junior Sarah Billingsley ran away from the field to claim the individual sectional title in a time of 18:19.

Billingsley’s closest competition came from teammates Meredith Maier and Kirsten Ricke.

Maier cross the finish line second with a time of 19:33, while Ricke was three seconds back.

Rachel Billingsley gave the Lady Twisters a fourth Top 10 finish. She was sixth with a time of 20:26.

Courtney Unkrich rounded out the scoring for the Lady Twisters in 36th place overall and a tie of 23:33.

Other Oldenburg runners competing in the 71-runner field were Bobbie Wagner (59th) and Jackie Unkrich (65th).

The second place Lady Bulldogs were led by sophomore Kelsey Gausman in seventh place. Gausman finished the 5K race in a time of 20:36.

Senior Hannah Lehfeldt was 10th overall for Batesville with a time of 20:55.

Freshman Maria Wessel climbed into the Top 15 in 14th with a mark of 21:15.

Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs were Jordan Lowery in 21st and a time of 22:23, while Breanna Hartman was 24th in 22:52.

Other runners competing for Batesville included Elizabeth Cuttle (35th) and Olivia Mobley (42nd).

The East Central Lady Trojans were led by Sarah Burke in 17th place and a time of 21:39.

The top five teams will now race at the Greensburg Regional on Saturday against teams feeding in from the Franklin Community Sectional.
