BATESVILLE —
Shortly after its 7-0 Regional Championship win over Silver Creek Saturday in Jasper, the Greensburg baseball team knew it had a serious shot to make more school history.
The third-ranked Pirates enter this Saturday's Class 3A semi-state game in Plainfield as the only ranked team in the Final Four, but realize it could end at the hands of another upset. Top-ranked Jasper had lost to Silver Creek 4-1 in the regional semifinal and Bellmont had beaten No. 3 Leo 4-3 for the regional title.
"It's just tough, because you can lose and you're done," said senior Ethan Bailey. "You win, and you're still alive."
The Pirates already matched the 2008 team's longest run in school history. They also matched last year's team record of 27 wins. Assistant coach Lynn Welch has seen six sectional championships and two regional crowns in his 14 years coaching.
"It never gets old," said Welch. "We've played hard all year. We've set a goal and we have to (work hard to achieve it). This team is an exceptional team."
The three Pirate seniors each played a key role in the championship weekend. Kevin Meyer pitched a two-hit shutout in the semifinal. Bailey hit a long home run in the first game and made three catches in center field. Clayton Tressler led the team in putouts in the title game with seven and completed two double plays at first base. He also hit a run-scoring double.
Meyer echoed the team's sentiments when he said he wanted to reach the highest destination.
"The road to victory is great," said Meyer. "Hopefully we keep this going."
Until then, head coach Scott Holdsworth and the Pirates went back to practice in preparation for Saturday's 1 p.m. game against Brebeuf Jesuit. He emphasized the importance of not looking ahead.
"We'll get some work done for Semi-State," he said. "It's been that way. We're not going to change that approach. It's been good to us."
