Bulldogs second at sectional meet

track and field

BATESVILLE — The Batesville High School boys track and field team came up just short in its bid at winning a sectional title Thursday night in St. Leon.

The host East Central Trojans claimed the title with a team score of 165 points with the Bulldogs second at 111.5. Rising Sun was third with 75 points, while the Oldenburg Academy Twisters (13) were 11th in the 12-team field.

The Bulldogs will be represented in 10 events at the Connersville Regional  with a total of 17 athletes competing.

The Bulldogs left the meet  with one individual and two relay teams winning sectional titles.

Nick Vodzak crossed the finish line first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:23.92.

The 4 x 100-meter relay team of Andy Nolan, Connor Jeffers, Gunter Jones and Tyler Leising  combined efforts to place first with a time of 44.91.

It was Jeffers, Cole Nuhring, Jordan Walsman and Mike Hoeing winning the 4 x 400-meter relay in a time of 3:32.39.

Second place finishers for the Bulldogs included Hayden Merkel (800-meter run) and Leising (200-meter dash), while third place honors went to Leising (100-meter dash), Bryce Timonera (discus), Ben Westerfeld (pole vault) and the 3,200-meter relay team of Vodzak, Trent Barnett, Garrett Yorn and Jan Sulaiman.

Fourth place finishers for Batesville were Craig Fullenkamp (110-meter hurdles),  Nolan (200-meter dash), Timonera (shot put), Anthony Garteman (pole vault).

Oldenburg Academy’s highest finish came in the 3,200-meter relay.  Isaiah Frey, Austin Frey, Chris Nurrenberg and Luke Wukusick teamed up to place fourth with a time of 9:22.67.

The top individual finish for the Twisters was turned in by Rui Cao. Cao placed fifth in the 100-meter dash.
