BATESVILLE — It looked as if the Oldenburg Academy Lady Twisters were in line for the first loss of the basketball season Friday night.
But fortunes turned late in the game and the Lady Twisters pulled out a 40-39 victory over the visiting Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles.
Oldenburg scored the opening basket of the game and then fell behind 12-7 by the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Twisters played from behind the entire way until the final minute.
The Lady Eagles led 34-26 with 4:57 to play in the game.
A 9-2 run by the Lady Twisters, which included a timely 3-point basket by Cora Weisenbach, pulled OA within one point at 36-35 with 2:39 on the clock.
Jac-Cen-Del took a slim 37-35 lead into the final minute.
Oldenburg Academy’s Kirsten Ricke tied the game at 37-37 with :32 to play.
A JCD turnover and blocking foul by Sydney Keene led to a pair of free throws by Ricke.
The Lady Eagles tied the game at 39-39 on a rebound basket by Brooklynn Ronsheim.
Ricke was fouled with hardly any time left on the clock. She hit 1-of-2 free throws, which proved to be the game-winner.
“This was not our best performance, but a quality win against a quality program,” OA head coach Dan Kerker commented. “We didn’t defend the post very well and they hurt us there all night.
“But I was proud of our kids’ hustle ... there were times when we were down nine that could have rolled over, but battled back,” he added.
Ricke led the team in scoring with 13 points followed by Weisenbach with 11.
Jac-Cen-Del’s Keene led all scorers with 16 points.
