Trojans go 2-2 in Bob Wettig Tournament

— It is a wild few days of basketball in Richmond.

The annual Bob Wettig Tournament is played over three days and includes 16 teams.

The East Central Trojans went 2-2 over the three day period with victories coming against Indianapolis Metropolitan and Indianapolis Tindley. The Trojans suffered a 51-41 loss in the first round to Mt. Lebanon (Pa.) and then a 53-36 decision to Portage in their third game.

The Trojans bounced back from the loss in the opener with a 56-37 win over Metropolitan.

Tied at the end of the first quarter, coach David Disbro’s crew took a three point lead at halftime and it later grew to 40-33 by the end of the third. The Trojans sealed the win by outscoring their opponents 16-7 over the final eight minutes.

Payton Stonefield led the team with 21 points, six assists and nine rebounds. The EC senior also tied for a team-high in steals with three.

Nathaniel Werner was second in the team in scoring with 11 points, while Cody Hudepohl grabbed six rebounds.

After a tough loss to Portage, the Trojans closed out the tournament with a 66-51 win over Tindley at Earlham College.

East Central set the tone early in the game with 19 points in each of the first two quarters. The end result was a 38-26 halftime lead.

Stonefield had another big game for the Trojans. He finished with 21 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Howie Backherms warmed up from the field and added 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.

The Columbus North Bull Dogs were the eventual team champion. North knocked off Jeffersonville 61-55 in the championship game. The host Red Devils defeated Guerin Catholic 61-55 for third place.
