The Batesville Lumbermen traveled to Garfield Park (Indianapolis) on June 19 to participate in the Hoosier Cup of Vintage Base Ball. The Hoosier Cup has each team playing three games and the team with the best record claims the Cup. The Lumbermen first played the St. Louis Unions. The Batesville team quickly took the lead after four innings (6-2) and finished off the match with an 11-8 victory. The second match was against the Mulberry Manglers and the Lumbermen gave up three runs in the first, but allowed only five more runs the rest of the game. They went on to post a 13-8 victory. The Lumbermen defeated the White River Base Ball Club 19-12 in the final match to go 3-0 on the day. The Indianapolis Hoosiers also ended the day with a 3-0 record, but the Lumbermen scored 43 runs to the Hoosiers’ 38. The greater number of runs was used as a tie-breaker for the title. Eric Kuntz, Scott Weberding, Dan Schuman and Tim Fullenkamp led the team with six runs scored apiece. Schuman was a team best 16-for-18 at the plate. Chris Casablanca, Glen Saler and Mark Stenger each hit safely 12 times The Lumbermen (7-0-1) will participate in the Vintage Base Ball World Series in French Lick in July.
