Four Bulldogs place in top four

The Batesville High School wrestlers produced four regional qualifiers from the sectional tournament on Saturday at Franklin County.

Mike Strub, Travis Nunlist, Brandon Gunter and Kevin Kreuzman emerged from the day-long event with top four finishes to advance.

The Bulldogs placed seventh in a field of nine teams with a score of 93 points. South Dearborn won the team title with 224.5 points, while Union County was second with 186.5.

Nunlist (26-8) was runner-up in the 140-lb. division. The BHS junior lost to Union County’s Mason Gesell in the finals.

Nunlist pinned Drew Hoffman of Connersville in the second round and advanced to the finals with a 7-5 overtime decision over South Dearborn’s Jesse Adams.

Brandon Gunter (17-6) lost to two-time state champion Michael Duckworth of Union County in the finals to place second.

Gunter defeated Greensburg’s Alex Fisher 10-8 in the semifinals. Fisher had defeated Gunter at the conference tournament one week earlier.

Gunter pinned South Dearborn’s Anthony Mathias in a fall time of 3:08 to move out of the first round.

Kevin Kreuzman, who is coming off an injury, placed third in the 285-lb. class.

After beating the No. 2 seeded wrestler from South Dearborn in the opening round, Kreuzman lost to Union County’s Kyle Ramsey in the second.

The BHS junior wrestled his way back into a qualifying spot with a pair of pins against Greensburg’s Devin Greiwe and another over Craig.

Strub (21-13) placed fourth in the 125-lb. weight division. The BHS junior won a 6-1 decision over South Dearborn’s Ronnie Whisman in the first round before losing to eventual sectional champion Jared Huff of Milan.

Strub went on to win his third match of the day by a 13-7 decision over Lawrenceburg’s K.C. Hedger.

Fifth place honors for the Bulldogs went to anthony Gartenman (119-lbs.), Brad Doehrman (130-lbs.) and Bryce Gorsuch (145-lbs.).

Jonathan Dawes was a winner of one match, but did not place. Dawes lost his opening round match at 103-lbs. to defending state champion Cody Phillips of Union County.

"Our sectional is very competitive and produced two state champions last year,” BHS coach Mick Reindorf commented. “Both are back and we could add a third in Tyler Clark of South Dearborn, who is currently undefeated at 130 lbs."
