Bulldogs advance to sectional finals

The Batesville High School boys basketball team has quietly put together a pretty impressive season.

The Bulldogs added another win to their total Friday night by knocking off Franklin County in the second round of the Greensburg Sectional.

The Bulldogs bounced back from a four point halftime deficit to beat the Wildcats 66-54 and advance to the finals.

After regaining the lead at 31-30 early in the second half, the Bulldogs turned the ball over on back-to-back possessions.

The Wildcats took advantage and scored each time to make it 34-31.

Batesville regrouped and went on a 14-4 run over the final four minutes of the quarter to take a 45-38 lead at the break. A 3-pointer by Zach Meyer and two point field goals by Chris Giesting and Connor Kelley sparked the Bulldogs in the closing minute.

The foul totals began to climb in the fourth quarter and both teams were given opportunities at the free throw line.

Neither team really took advantage. The Wildcats were 5-of-8, while the Bulldogs were just 10-of-18 over the final eight minutes.

Fortunately, the Bulldogs were able to preserve the victory in other ways.

Good defense forced Franklin County into a few low percentage attempts and the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on an aggressive Wildcats defense. Easy baskets against the defensive pressure and a few free throws scattered in kept the Batesville lead between 10 and 15 points over the final three minutes.

A balanced scoring attack was led by Cameron Fledderman an Giesting with 11 points each followed by Kelley with 10. Chris Lanning and Tom Jeffers each had nine.

The Bulldogs improved to 18-4 on the season and will play Greensburg in the sectional finals.
