-- — The Batesville Lumbermen vintage baseball team traveled to Rising Sun on June 24 to take on Belle River.
Coming off a tough loss, the match quickly turned into an offensive display by the Lumbermen and posted a 20-14 victory. The Lumbermen took a commanding 7-1 lead after the first inning as the first seven strikers "batters" scored in the inning.
The next four innings showed little offense as the Belle River club tallied three aces, while the Lumbermen scratched across three of their own.
The offense took over again in the final four innings. Belle River plated 10 aces as did the Lumbermen.
Strong pitching by Anthony "Big City" Casablanca and the Lumbermen defense was on display in the middle of the game as the opponent was whitewashed "shut out" in four of those innings. Two double plays were turned in by the Lumbermen in the game.
Tim "Sparky" Fullenkamp and Scott Shaggy Weberding led the offense with five hits apiece. Jeff "Blue" Bolchalk, Glenn "Red" Saler, Grant "GiGi" Griffith, Mark "Spider" Stenger and Chris "Chicken Wing" Wessel each had four hits.
The Lumbermen will next play in Indianapolis on July 1, against the Indianapolis Hoosiers.
The Lumbermen are now 6-3 on the season.
