Late rally comes up short for Lady Bulldogs


South Ripley spoiled the senior night celebration with a 54-43 victory over the Batesville Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs led early, but it did not take long for South Ripley to gain the advantage.

Trailing 9-6, the Lady Raiders capitalized on three consecutive Batesville turnovers and took a 14-9 lead on back-to-back field goals by Jessica Foster.

Batesville’s Elise Stephens broke the scoring drought with a field goal at the 2:13 mark.

South Ripley answered with five points in a row to make it 19-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was played in spurts – the Lady Bulldogs dominated the first five minutes and South Ripley controlled the final three.

Batesville was able to erase the eight point deficit and tied the game on a field goal by Maddie Lambert at the 3:20 mark. Becca Wintz scored just under a minute later to give BHS a 23-21 lead.

Then the momentum shifted.

The Lady Raiders scored the final nine points of the half to take a 30-23 lead into halftime.

They would not trail again in the game.

The South Ripley lead grew to 38-24 at the 5:07 mark in the third quarter.

Batesville was able to trim the deficit to four points on field goals by Michelle Grossman and Erin Lanning.

The Lady Raiders regrouped and outscored Batesville 8-1 over the final two minutes.

Foster led all scorers with 14 points followed by Sarah Webster with 13.

The Lady Bulldogs got a team-high 10 from Stephens and nine from Lawson Sitterding.

The Lady Bulldogs were 29-25 winners over South Ripley and improved to 11-5 on the season.

Batesville led at halftime 12-8, but was outscored 12-5 in the third quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs answered with a 12 point four quarter to pull out the win.

Freshman Shelby Ronnebaum led the team in scoring with 13 points. Alle Salatin and Taylor Johnson added four points each.
