Dear Editor, I would trust the family of Mr. Dan Hillenbrand will take great comfort in the accolades that will surely pour in on his passing. I never really knew the man, but did have the brief privilege of knowing his daughters as a youngster growing up in Batesville so many years ago. I would like to offer my condolences because of a special affinity I have for Dan's exemplary military record. Three Bronze Stars, Two Air Medals and a Distinguished Flying Cross: each would tell a story of another hero of our "Greatest Generation". Today, just one of these combat awards is a singularly unique achievement. Mr. Hillenbrand's war time record speaks quiet volumes of the character of the man. When my own father passed, I distinctly remember, in a quiet moment, marvelling at the selfless sacrifice and bravery of the Batesville men and women, husbands and wives, moms and dads, brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts of that remarkable generation. Dan Hillenbrand now stands with many of them in a higher place of honor surely to be joined by others in the years ahead. Their legacy will endure. May Mr. Hillenbrand enjoy the peace he fought so bravely to preserve for the rest of us. Semper Fideles Dan Bill Hammerle Colonel USMC Tustin, CA
