Our View: PAAIN has made an impact

-- — There’s a reason Batesville isn’t overrun with stray cats and dogs like so many other communities, including Indianapolis.

People Assisting Animals In Need, a volunteer organization of perhaps a dozen volunteers, has helped area families get 1,997 pets altered since 2007 by offering low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter clinics twice each month.

That’s an extremely impressive number.

Other recent statistics show the worth of this organization. Members found “forever homes” for 194 dogs and puppies last year and 17 so far in 2011.

And these are healthy pets. PAAIN’s two annual fundraisers, a garage sale and Strutt Your Mutt, help offset veterinary care costs. Prior to adoption, each dog is vaccinated, sterilized, microchipped and heartworm screened.

In a letter to supporters, President Judy Behlmer, Treasurer Millie Smith and Secretary Nan Larson said they believe “every pet deserves a home, access to vet care, plentiful food and water and abundant love.”

We commend PAAIN for its efforts and hope citizens will support its mission in three ways – by making sure their pets cannot reproduce, by contributing dollars and also by adopting pets from either PAAIN or area humane societies.
