Sister Mary Ammann, 94

-- — Sister Mary Ammann, 94, of the Sisters of St. Francis in Oldenburg, died Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at the convent.

Born Jan. 6, 1918, in Cincinnati, she was the daughter of Rose (Erlewein) and Albert Ammann.

She entered the convent Feb. 2, 1959, and made her final vows Aug. 12, 1965. She taught several years each at Scecina High School, Indianapolis, and Rex Mundi High School, Evansville, before spending the next 33 years at Oldenburg Academy as a biology teacher. She would become the school’s first athletic director and would serve in that capacity for 16 years.

Prior to entering the convent, she taught at Our Lady of Angels High School and Mount St. Joseph College, Cincinnati. She retired to the Motherhouse in 1998.

Sister Mary is survived by her brother, Richard Ammann, Cincinnati, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by brothers Albert, Edward, Jacob, William and Robert Ammann.

Visitation is Friday, July 20, from 1-3 p.m. at the Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Carl Hawver, OFM, officiating. Burial will be in the convent cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis. Weigel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
