Sister Julitta Steckler, OSF, 97

-- — Sister Julitta Steckler, OSF, 97, of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at the convent.

Born July 28, 1915, in Haubstadt, she was the daughter of the late Anna (Hillenbrand) and John Steckler.

She entered the convent June 15, 1933, and made her final vows Jan. 6, 1941. She was a teacher and principal for 48 years at many schools, including Old Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Vincent de Paul and St. Clements, Cincinnati; St. Catherine and Holy Trinity, St. Louis; St. Anthony’s, Streator, Ill.; Sacred Heart, Clinton; St. Mary’s, Greensburg; St. Francis de Sales, St. Mark’s and St. Lawrence, Indianapolis; St. Wendel, Wadesville; St. Joseph, Princeton; St. Anthony’s, Evansville; and Holy Family, Oldenburg. Her ability to teach any student to read, her kind manner and her quick wit allowed her to serve both students and adults as teacher.

After retiring from teaching in 1983, she would spend the next 12 years in nursing home ministry, parish ministry and at the Ozanam Shelter for homeless families in Evansville before retiring in 1990.

Sister Julitta is survived by her sister, Sister Dorothy Steckler, OSF, Oldenburg.

She also was preceded in death by sisters Anita, Veronica, Priscilla, Carrie, Lorene, Ann Louise and Mary Dolores and brothers Gilbert, Albert, Raymond and Francis.

Visitation is Monday, Sept. 24, from 1-3 p.m. at the Motherhouse Chapel, Oldenburg. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Carl Hawver, OFM, officiating. Weigel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis.
