Richard Bentley Goodwin was born Dec. 7, 1932, in Greensburg, the eldest son of Walter and Frances (Applegate) Goodwin.
Richard “Dick” was married to Jean Theresa Zimmerman Sept. 10, 1955, at St. Louis Catholic Church, and they shared 52 loving years of marriage.
He is survived by six children: Jeffrey, Lynn Marie (Robbin), Gregory, Thomas, Elizabeth (Lattire) and Robert. There are also 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Grandson Matthew died in infancy.
Richard is survived by one brother: William, San Francisco; and one sister: Mary Frances, Bloomington.
He served proudly in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea from 1953-55. In 1961, Richard and Jean built their family home, where they raised their family and lived until Jean’s death in June 2008.
Richard worked as a machinist and retired from NTN-BCA Corp., Greensburg, in 1997 after 32 years of service. He took pride in his precise work and was known as “Goody” to his co-workers. He was a member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed reading history, science and politics and listening to NPR radio and classical music. He was unbeatable in the geography category of Trivial Pursuit!
He was a gentle, loving father who instilled in his children a strong work ethic and values of honesty and compassion for others. Richard began to suffer from dementia 10 years ago, but never lost his pleasant, good-natured personality and sense of humor. His sources of strength continued to be his Catholic faith and family. Thank you for all your prayers, kind words and deeds for our father and our families. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the staff at St. Andrews Health Campus memory care unit and the excellent care of the Hospice of Margaret Mary Community Hospital staff.
There will be no visitation. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at St. Louis Catholic Church with the Rev. Frank Eckstein officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by Batesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3183 and Prell-Bland American Legion Post 271.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Margaret Mary Community Hospital.
Thank you for joining in celebrating his birth into new life with our Lord Jesus Christ. After the cemetery service is concluded, please join us for lunch at the Knights of Columbus hall.
