Raymond E. Roell, 87

— Raymond E. Roell, 87, Batesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at St. Andrews Health Campus.

Born June 7, 1925, in Ripley County, he was the son of Clara (Merkel) and Otto Roell Sr. He married Dorothy Batta April 26, 1949, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, St. Peter’s, and she preceded him in death Feb. 15, 2005.

Ray farmed and worked as a carpenter for 44 years, 26 of those for Steinkamp and Co. He served in the Army’s First Division of the Fifth Calvary as a medic during World War II.

Ray loved to tell stories about his experiences from the war and his carpentry days. He was equally proud of his service as field medic as he was of his construction skills. He prided himself in doing things right.

To say Ray was a huge Reds fan would be an understatement. He loved to listen or watch the Reds play and rarely missed a game. A farmer at heart, he raised a vegetable garden for years and grew grapes as well that would become jellies and juice. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling and counted a trip to Hawaii among their favorites.

He is survived by his daughters, Marilyn Todd and Sharon Eckstein, Sunman; sons James and Earl, Batesville, and David, Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Adeline Jaehnen; brothers Cornelius, Otto Jr., Lawrence, Maurice, Elmer and Alexander; and one grandson.

Visitation is Friday, Jan. 11, from 4-7 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home with a rosary service at 4 p.m. Funeral services are at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at St. Louis Catholic Church with the Rev. Randy Summers officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home Saturday morning prior to services.

Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by Batesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3183 and Prell-Bland American Legion Post 271. The family requests memorials to the Batesville Fire Department, New Point Fire Department or American Red Cross.
