Indians win fifth game in a row

MILAN – The Milan Indians hosted South Decatur Friday night in the second round of the Sectional 38 football tournament.

It was the second meeting this season for the two teams. The first was Sept. 30 at South Decatur. The Indians won by a 52 -35 margin.

The scoring wasn't as high but the result was the same Friday night. Milan won the game 24-6 and will play in the sectional championship game this Friday at Park Tudor.

The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie, but the Indians had a drive going as the second quarter opened. That drive was helped along on a 40 yard run by senior Nick Arthur. It was Arthur who capped the drive with a one-yard run for the touchdown. Derek Pennington kicked the extra point to give Milan a 7-0 lead with 10:55 left in the half.

The Cougars had a chance to tie the game with a long drive before half. The key play in the drive was a 55-yard pass to the 7 yard line from quarterback Tyler Mote to Skylar Breece.

South’s Curtis Johnson took the ball in from the seven at the 7:39 mark.

An intercepted pass by Jeremy Litteral set up Milan's second touchdown of the game. Arthur finished off the drive with a two-yard plunge with 38 seconds left in the half. Pennington split the uprights to give Milan a 14-0 lead. South Decatur was unable to move the ball after receiving the kick-off and the two teams headed to the warmth of the locker rooms with Milan holding an 8-point lead.

The two teams traded possession of the ball in the third quarter until Pennington recovered a South Decatur fumble at the Cougars 34-yard line. The Indians drove down to the six-yard line when the drive stalled. Milan coach Ryan Langferman called for a field goal and after a five-yard penalty on the Indians Pennington responded with a 29-yard kick to give Milan a 17-6 lead with the third-quarter clock showing 3:31.

The final touchdown of the game came in the fourth quarter on an 80-yard run by Bob Stanley after South Decatur turned the ball over on downs. Pennington kicked the extra point to make the final score 24-6.

The Indians advance in the tournament with a 6-5 record. The victory over South Decatur was Milan's fifth win in a row.
