New warnings may come in handy

Mayor Rick Fledderman recently announced that changes have been made to better inform citizens on severe weather.

In the past, since the city limits extend into both Ripley and Franklin counties, residents needed to call both counties to find out if they were under a weather warning. The warnings for each county were also different, meaning that a Level I emergency in Ripley County wasn’t the same as a Level I in Franklin County.

Fledderman worked with Ripley County Commissioners, who recently adopted new weather emergency warnings, making them consistent with surrounding counties.

The mayor has initiated these changes, and the city will continue to recognize the warnings in efforts to keep the citizens safe and informed.

In the event of severe weather, city officials will get information out to citizens through local media.

Residents are also encouraged to sign up for a free information service called Nixle. The Batesville Police Department uses the service to distribute information to the community via text messaging and/or e-mail. Citizens will get information on weather, school closings community events and emergency alerts. Persons can sign up by going to www.nixle.com and click on "Sign up Now.”

The Weather Emergency Warnings include:

• Level 1

The roadways are hazardous with accumulated debris and/or blowing and drifting snow.

Roads may be icy. Motorists should use caution while driving and limit travel.

• Level 2

Roadway conditions have become dangerous to routine traffic, with accumulated debris and/or blowing and drifting snow. Icing may take place by means of freezing rain, sleet or packed snow. Only travel that is necessary should be attempted. Employees should contact their employers to see if they should report to work.

• Level 3

All roadways are closed to all non-emergency traffic. Driving is prohibited unless it is due to an emergency and should be limited to essential personnel only. Those traveling on closed roadways for other than emergency or essential travel may be subject to citation by law enforcement personnel.
