--- — Since the Batesville Parks and Recreation Board voted to temporarily close Liberty Park’s Eastern Avenue entrance to vehicular traffic last month, members have not heard negative comments. The entryway is still open to walkers and cyclists. People are concerned about children’s safety with vehicles passing the playground there, noted Tim Hunter, presiding at the Aug. 19 meeting in Bob Fitzpatrick's absence. He explained the city was made an offer that in return for permanently closing the entrance, the Indiana Department of Transportation would provide funding to improve the Pohlman Street southeast park entrance. Member Don Karbowski said it's important that a more narrow Eastern Avenue entry still look presentable. He and member Beth Meyers asked about cost estimates to improve both entrances, but none were available. Noting the department has a tight budget, she wondered “why we're going to sink money into either ... when we don't know the costs involved.” Meyers also was concerned the INDOT money might not materialize. Clerk-treasurer Ron Weigel said, “There will be more information presented. The Batesville Board of Works has the final say” about the entrance’s closure, but wanted a BPRB recommendation. Meyers said she didn't want to make one "based on such vague information" and the two other members there agreed. The issue was tabled.
