Traffic stop leads to felony arrest

— Franklin County sheriff’s Deputy Greg Mehlbauer initiated a traffic stop on a gold 1998 Saturn because of an equipment violation on Buena Vista Road just north of Stipps Hill Road Feb. 25 at 11:06 p.m. The deputy requested the assistance of a K-9, so Deputy John Roberts and his K-9 partner, Lito, responded.

“After conducting an open air sniff of the outside of the vehicle, Lito gave a positive indication to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle,” Mehlbauer reported.

During the search, 113 grams of marijuana, which is the equivalent of nearly a quarter of a pound, was found inside.

Passenger Calvin Lewis, 20, Glenwood, was arrested for possession of marijuana over 30 grams, a Class D felony. He was lodged in the Franklin County Security Center, Brookville, in lieu of $5,000 cash/surety bond or $10,000 property bond.

Driver Samantha Richardson, 22, Laurel, and a 3-year-old were released at the scene. Richardson was issued a written warning for the equipment violation.

If convicted of a Class D felony, Lewis could be sentenced up to three years with the Department of Corrections, and fined up to $10,000.

Mehlbauer noted, “The case is still under investigation and more arrests could follow.”
