Citizens voice complaints to STC

BATESVILLE — Several citizens told Sunman Town Council members Nov. 15 they were not happy with some individuals and businesses in town.

Denny Brunemann, 305 W. Washington St.,  said  one of his neighbors has a business out of his home.

“I’ve looked through the zoning codes, and his house does not meet the requirements of a roadside business .... He has no fence or setback.

“On another note, there’s an enormous amount of noise (coming from Simpson and Sons, which repairs rail cars), and it’s hurting the sale of my house.”

He wondered if council members could do something to decrease the noise and enforce the zoning codes. Three other neighbors were also in attendance and agreed with Brunemann.

Member Jared Wolf noted, “If he’s breaking any rule or zoning, we need to take care of it.”

Town Marshal Bill Dramann wondered if anyone had approached them about the noise complaint. Those in attendance said yes.

Tammy Wolfe, 210 Vine St., pointed out, “Our side of town is starting to look crappy. There’s mattresses sitting around and people letting garbage lay in their yards for weeks.

“There are fights in the bars and all kinds of things happening at all hours .... and there are kids knocking over bird baths, reflectors and throwing rocks.”

Wolf thought, “The first thing I see is sending them a letter.”

She stressed, “You can send a letter, but if it’s not enforced, it’s not going to work.”

Town attorney Amy Streator revealed, “With the ordinance, you have a penalty” that could be enforced.

Clerk-treasurer Kris Schneider wondered if a phone call would be the first action to take. Members decided to have her call those in violation first and ask them to clean up the trash. Then other steps will be taken if necessary.
