“Can We Feed Ourselves? The Journey to Local Sustainable Food” is the focus of the 2009 Grower-Producer Seminar organized by the Food & Growers Association of Laughery Valley & Environs. It is slated for Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Batesville Primary School.
The educational seminar is aimed at food growers and producers, hobby farmers, home gardeners, farmers’ market vendors and those interested in a safe, local food supply.
Keynote speaker Victoria Wesseler will discuss “How we Lost Touch With our Food and Why we Need to Reconnect.” The MSN lifestyle and home entertainment columnist has written culinary segments for WKYT, Lexington, Ky., and is the author of the Indiana food blog “Going Local” (wwwgoinglocal-info.com).
Other topics and speakers: “Beyond Tomatoes and Green Peppers” by Mike Roney of Tuttle Orchards, Greenfield; “Value Added Through Artisan Products From the Family Farm” by Alan and Mary Yegerlehner of Swiss Connection, Clay City; and “Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Grants” by Keith and Anna Welch of Fields of Agape, Carthage.
The event also will be filled with educational sessions, a panel discussion, award presentations, information tables, networking and a catered lunch featuring local food.
Supporters and sponsors include Margaret Mary Community Hospital, the city of Batesville, Reding–Moody Consulting and Lil’ Charlie's Steak & Grill.
The cost is $15 payable at the door.
