Three Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corp. principals gave updates on what is happening at their buildings at the Sept. 10 board of trustees meeting.
Norb Goessling, Bright Elementary School principal, said, “We had an electrical fire on the sixth day of school ....(and) the evacuation was unbelievably smooth. So many people stepped up and helped that day .... within an hour, there were seven buses to transport” the students to North Dearborn Elementary School.
Jeff Bond, NDES principal, revealed, “It only took 15 extra minutes to get the kids (from BES and NDES) through the cafeteria line.” He also noted he had received many comments from staff members that the “BES kids were very well behaved.”
Custodians and maintenance staff “got our electrical board back together .... (and) within 48 hours, we were up and running,” the BES leader announced.
He also said, “Our newly-renovated playground was vandalized” Sept. 5 by youth in a golf cart with a sunroof. “We caught them on film .... at least five kids were involved .... (and) they had a field day on Labor Day weekend.”
Goessling indicated, “The police were very unhelpful” so he made a plea to trustees, “I’m requesting any assistance you can give us.”
Regarding H1N1, he stated, “At BES, we do have an isolation room .... when kids come to the nurse with a fever, they’ll be asked to stay there until their parents pick them up.”
Don Criswell, East Central High School principal, reported the high school has “about 18 stands with sanitizers” throughout the building, and “we have them in the cafeteria in all our lines .... with signs that say to sanitize before eating .... We also have them in the classrooms, and students are using them.”
Bond thanked ECHS FFA adviser Ron Johnson and FFA members for installing a play set in the courtyard, which is being used by North Dearborn Elementary School preschool students.
Johnson showed attendees a display board, which contained photos of the renovation as it progressed. Funds were obtained through an Indiana FFA/ Monsanto Community Service Initiative Grant. Gillman Do It Best Home Center, Batesville, donated the lumber.
