Ohio State University professor Milt Allen will conduct the Batesville Middle School seventh and eighth grades combined band Monday, March 11, at 7 p.m. during a free half-hour show at the Batesville High School auditorium.
“It will be well worth it” to attend, promises BMS band director Eric Stauffer. One sixth-grader will be selected to open the concert as a soloist, performing the theme from the second movement of the “New World Symphony” by Antonin Dvorák.
“Doc” Allen has been a music educator for over 26 years at public and parochial middle and high schools. He is an advocate for new and original band music and also the author of “Music, Artistry and Education: A Journey Towards Musical Growth and Enlightenment.” Allen has published an article specifically about how parents can encourage their children to love playing instruments and how they can be a positive drive for music education.
Allen is the second guest artist to teach students here within a week, following Manhattan jazz drummer Brian Carter, Stauffer points out. “I wouldn’t be able to do it without the Rural Alliance for the Arts. Their Arts in Education fund is invaluable.”
Both artists also are sponsored by Batesville Music Boosters and Allen by Jupiter Instruments, which provided a grant for him to come here.
