Batesville police K-9 will arrive in early June

-- — An extra $1,500 was donated to start a Batesville Police Department K-9 program with the single purpose of sniffing out drugs, bringing the total to $27,600, Chief Stan Holt told the city council May 14.

“We are scheduled to pick the dog up on June 4.” After being at home with the handler for a week, Patrolman Danny Hamilton and the K-9 will undergo three weeks of training, then patrol.

A woman who wants to open a smoothie and sandwich shop has received a $20,000 loan from the city’s USDA Rural Development Rural Business Enterprise Grant Fund, Mayor Rick Fledderman reported.

After an unsuccessful 2011 attempt, the city and Batesville Main Street again are applying for a state façade grant that will improve 10 businesses.

The council awarded $1,000 each in Belterra riverboat revenue-sharing dollars to the Batesville Music and Arts Festival and also to the county committee hosting the American Veterans Traveling Tribute, which includes an 80 percent replica of the Vietnam War Memorial. It can be viewed in Versailles July 19-22.

The council granted Med-Mizer 10-year real property and five-year personal property tax abatements. An expansion means a handful of employees will be added.
