As snow continues to fall, slide-offs are being reported in the area.
The day began with this traffic news: The light on U.S. 50 at U.S. 421 (west junction) or the area locally known as the “Wye” in Versailles was malfunctioning at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, said Sgt. Noel Houze, Indiana State Police Versailles District public information officer.
The reports are the traffic light stays red for extended periods of time. Indiana Department of Transportation leaders believe the problem is weather related (packed snow affecting the sensors) and that the problem will correct itself once they are able to plow the snow in the area.
At 10:15 a.m., Houze gave an update: Citizens are urged to limit travel to necessary travel only. "If you must travel, slow down and use extreme caution."
"Troopers on Interstate 74 have worked several slide-offs this morning and are advising they are receiving extremely heavy snowfall at this time." There may be lane restrictions and back-ups. He said drivers should reduce their speed, particularly when approaching troopers who are assisting motorists and investigating crashes.
"Secondary roads are snow covered and hazardous," in the Indiana State Police Connersville District, which includes Franklin County, said Sgt. John Bowling, ISP public information officer there, at 10 a.m. "State roads appear the same across our six-county district. Units on I-70 are reporting the road is covered with a light layer of snow and is slick and hazardous. The area continues to see light to moderate snowfall at this time. Units have worked a few slide-offs and crashes, but none with personal injury, he reported.
