Beginning Thursday, March 21, State Road 229 four miles south of Batesville will temporarily close for five months, Indiana Department of Transportation media relations director Greg Prince has announced.
A bridge constructed in 1972 over Laughery Creek between county roads 1200 North and 50 East just south of Ballstown will be replaced. Engineers originally discussed patching worn spots, then pouring a thin concrete overlay on the bridge deck, but decided that would have added too much weight, he explained.
Prince said, “During the closure, no through vehicle traffic will be allowed. However, local residents will have access to the point of closure.”
Official detour routes are along state roads 48, 129 and 46.
The road is expected to re-open to traffic in August.
Sunesis Construction of Ohio was awarded the $503,318 project, according to him.
He added, “INDOT reminds motorists to follow the posted work zone speed limit, use caution and consider worker safety when traveling through a work zone.”
