U.S. 52 will be resurfaced

-- — The Indiana Department of Transportation awarded an asphalt paving contract for U.S. 52 – from Rushville to Andersonville in Rush and Franklin counties – to Milestone Contractors LP Oct. 24.  The Columbus-based company’s $1.3 million bid was the lowest of three submitted, said spokesman Harry Maginity.

The section will be closed Monday, Nov. 5, for about 25 days.

“Earlier the 11-mile highway section was chip sealed as a pavement preservation measure, but results of that treatment were inadequate and require remediation,” he explained. Two weeks ago, INDOT officials pulled back from plans for a subsequent chip seal application in favor of resurfacing the road.  Since that time, an all-out effort has been made to expedite the planning and approval process required to implement such a project.

Milling one-half inch of surface asphalt will begin the first day with paving a 1.5-inch surface lift of asphalt one day behind the milling operation.

To expedite the process, INDOT officials will close U.S. 52 to motorists, allowing local residential traffic to be directed by flaggers through active work zones.  This will be a “hard” closure for through trucks.  Indiana State Police are being asked to enforce through-truck compliance.

The schedule calls for all work to be completed, weather permitting, by Nov. 30.
