Investigation leads to arrests

A large amount of cocaine packaged for sale was found in an apartment at 16 N. Walnut St., Batesville, Friday night, March 5, reported Ripley County Sheriff Tom Grills.

Six Batesville men were arrested after a search warrant issued by Ripley Superior Court was executed there.

“Everybody’s trying to fight the war on drugs,” the sheriff said. “We just happened to develop some information. Batesville police offered their assistance.”

Five Ripley County Sheriff’s Office personnel, including Grills, and four Batesville Police Department officers were there for several hours. “We had to secure all the occupants and execute the search warrant.”

Antonio Nunez Sanchez, 23, and Jorge Armando Garcia, 32, were arrested for dealing cocaine, a Class B felony, according to RCSO Deputy Abraham Hildebrand. Sanchez and Javier Nunez, 31, were arrested for possession of cocaine, a Class C felony, and maintaining a common nuisance, a Class D felony.

Three were detained for visiting a common nuisance, a Class B misdemeanor: Teleforo Santiago, 37; Jose Antonio Jimenez, 27; and Ramiro Davalos, 29. The six were still incarcerated Monday morning, said jail Office Robert Holt.

Prosecutor Ric Hertel said no initial hearings have been set. “Charging decisions will be made after reviewing the completed investigation.”

The sheriff said teamwork between agencies is important in solving crimes. “The sheriff’s office is committed to making sure everybody is working together and the information is flowing.”

“All defendants are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” reminded Hildebrand.
