The Southeastern Indiana YMCA and Margaret Mary Community Hospital Sports Medicine Department will host the third annual Coaches vs. Cancer Charity Basketball Night Friday, March 12, at the Batesville Middle School gym.
A fourth game has been added this year as St. Louis School and Greensburg High School both joined the event.
The first game, East Central vs. Greensburg, tips off at 5:30 p.m. The remaining schedule: 6:30 p.m., Oldenburg Academy vs. Lawrenceburg; 7:30 p.m., YMCA/MMCH Sports Medicine vs. St. Louis; and 8:30 p.m., Batesville vs. South Dearborn.
Trent Freyer, YMCA sports and recreation senior director, says, “This is a great family event where the kids and adults can watch their favorite coaches and faculty from area high schools compete against each other for two great causes – the American Cancer Society and Southeastern Indiana YMCA.”
In addition to concessions and $12 event T-shirts, a silent auction and raffle table will boast various sports memorabilia, such as an autographed minihelmet of Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen and autographed Butler University basketball team ball.
Additionally, the Indiana Pacers will have their fan van at the event from 5-7 p.m. plus Wolf Theater will sponsor halftime shooting contests at each game.
Freyer adds, “We hope to have a great crowd at this year’s event.” The proceeds will be split between ACE, headquartered in Columbus, Ind.; and the YMCA. “Last year we were able to raise $2,500.”
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers basketball coaches, their teams and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership and professional experiences of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities and advocacy programs.
The mission of the Southeastern Indiana YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all, the director reports.
Proceeds will be added to Strong Kids campaign funds. He explains, “We are able to provide kids with life-enriching activities and programs that may not exist for them otherwise. One such program is the after-hours programs for middle school and high school age youth. This program allows teens a safe, fun atmospheric place to hang out. Throughout the calendar year, the YMCA stays open until midnight to allow teens from all backgrounds to interact, play basketball and other games for free.”
Cost for the four-game event is $5, with children 3 and under free.
