BATESVILLE — Five adults were found shot to death in Laurel Sunday, Sept. 25, said Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin, the Sellersburg District public information officer.
At about 1:23 p.m. that day, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department received a call from people traveling near the address of 24015 Stipps Hill Road stating they saw a small child wandering around in the road.
Goodin explained, "The Good Samaritans did not see any adults with the child, so they stopped and stayed with the child\" until a deputy arrived. After gaining more information from the child and neighbors, he called for backup from other officers.
ISP troopers from the Versailles post and an Indiana Conservation Officer arrived and began an immediate search of the area, according to Goodin. Officers located the body of a dead male at 24030 Stipps Hill Road. The bodies of four other people, two males and two females, were located across the road at 24015 Stipps Hill Road.
The sergeant said later Sunday, \"At this time Indiana State Police crime scene investigators, detectives from the Indiana State Police Post at Versailles and officers from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department are still trying to determine exactly what happened. It is unknown if there is one or multiple shooters. It is also unknown at this time if the shooter or shooters could be among the deceased."
No information about the deceased will be released until autopsies are performed Monday morning in Indianapolis and all family members are notified.
Goodin advised, "Police would like to caution neighbors to be careful answering their doors and to report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 911 as investigators work to piece together what happened."
Persons who know anything about this crime are encouraged to contact ISP detectives at 800-566-6704 or 812-689-5000. Callers can remain anonymous.
