Lady Eagles edge South Dearborn

The Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles traveled to Aurora to face the South dearborn Lady Knightsand escaped with 65-64 victory.

The game had multiple ties and lead changes from the tip with both teams knotted at 21 after the first period, according to JCD coachh Scott Smith.

The Lady Knights score just before the end of the first half and entered the intermission with a 38-36 advantage

South Dearborn followed up with the first five points fo the third quarter to claim a seven point lead.

Jac-Cen-Del bounced back. A Becca Wagner basket started a 19-11 JCD run that ended with the Lady Eagles leading 55-54.

The fourth quarter was much like the first three with the lead bouncing back and forth.

With less than two minutes to play, a Kaylin Ploeger three point play put the Lady Eagles on top by three points.

After a South Dearborn score the stage was set for a wild finish. t was a still a one point game with :40 to play.

Jac-Cen-Del’s Val Wagner was fouled with :20 to play and sank the first of two free throws. Wagner missed the second of the bonus situation, but the ball caromed out of bounds and the Lady Eagles retained possession.

However, South Dearborn’s Abby Schmall stole the inbounds pass, drove the length of the court and scored. Schmall was fouled on the play and completed the three point play.

Jac-Cen-Del called timeout with 7.9 seconds to play. The Lady Eagles set their inbounds play and freshman Becca Wagner drove down the floor and was fouled going to the bucket with 2.3 left. The freshman calmly sank both FT's to give JCD the dramatic win.

“Win or lose, these are the kind of games when you see what your made of,” Smith commented. “Both teams answered every time the other tried to pull away.

“It took a total team effort and balanced scoring to get this win. We also got great efforts off the bench from Carissa Simon, Harlemert, and Janine Huff,” he added.

The Lady Eagles were paced by Becca Wagner with 12 pointsfollowed by Ploeger and Val Wagner 11. Kiersten Young added 10. Ploeger pulled down 11 rebounds, while Becca Wagner and Kristen Hicks each dished out six assists.

Jac-Cen-Del improved to 7-0 on the season.
