BHS slips past Pirates in soccer

Scoring has been difficult at times for the Batesville boys varsity soccer team, but the defense stepped up big again and shut out the Greensburg Pirates.

The slipped past the Pirates by a 1-0 margin.

With the score deadlocked at zero with nine minutes remaining in the game, sophomore Alex Meer was able to convert a rebound in front of the Pirate goal for the eventual game winner.

The scoring play resulted when Joe Chaffee was able to blast a shot from just outside the box. The ball struck the far post and Meer was able to get the winner, according to head coach Mike Robertson.

The Pirates came out fired up and Batesville was completely flat for the entire first half. "It looked like we were sleepwalking out there,” Robertson commented.

The Pirates controlled much of the first half as goalie Jake Wilson got plenty of action. Wilson finished with 10 saves.

“The Bulldogs’ first half attack was limited to bad touch and sloppy passing, which put the defense under pressure the entire half.,” assistant coach Chris Fox commented. "Fortunately we were able to go into the half with the game 0-0.”

Dogs and Knights tie

The Batesville Bulldogs and South Dearborn Knights battled to a 2-2 tie.

The Knights scored both of their goals early in the match and forced the Bulldogs to play from behind.

"If that wasn’t enough to get our attention, I don’t know what would,” Robertson commented.

Batesville regrouped and immediately began to control the rest of the half and were able to tie the game 2-2 by halftime.

"We really started turning up the intensity and our level of play,” Fox added. “It was lucky for South Dearborn that the half came because we had the momentum.”

Chaffee got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard as he scored his eighth goal of the season.

The second goal came as a result of a penalty kick by Keith Williams. His shot hit the post and sophomore Zach Meyer alertly followed up the shot and buried the goal to tie the score.

Defensively Batesville was able to withstand the South Dearborn attack. Ted Cooley again turned in an outstanding game by tracking down several balls and helping to transition the attack, according to Robertson.

"Evan Grossman also turned in solid game. Some of his runs up the side resulted in excellent crossing opportunities in the box,” Fox commented.

“This was a disappointing game for us,” Robertson commented. “For the second game in a row, we came out with no intensity or energy.

“That cost us tonight and almost cost us earlier this week against Greensburg,” he added.

The tie brings the overall record to 9-2-2 and 6-1-2 in the conference.
