OA boys beat University

The Oldenburg Academy varsity basketball team bounced back from a disappointing defeat Friday night to knock off University on Saturday.

The Twisters fell behind early, but kept their composure. Jason Eckstein scored 10 of his game high 25 points in the second quarter to help rally Oldenburg to a 26-19 halftime lead.

“We gave them too many opportunities in the first half,” OA head coach Matt Maple said. “We pressed them in the second half and that really helped.

“Andrew (Newton) gave us a big lift in the third quarter with a pair of 3-pointers,” he added.

Both teams were offensive-minded in the third quarter. The Twisters put 22 more more points on the scoreboard, but gave up 21.

Oldenburg entered the final eight minutes of play with a 48-40 lead.

Andrew Newton came off the bench to give the Twisters a boost offensively. Newton hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored eightpoints over the final two quarters.

Benjamin Newton also chipped in eight points followed by Michael Kristoff with six. Benjamin Newton also set a new school record with 14 rebounds in the game.

“Saturday was the best we have played this season,” Maple said. “I thought we play especially well in the second half.”

The Twisters had a much tougher time of it Friday night against South Ripley. The host Raiders beat the academy 81-41.

Oldenburg gave up 22 first quarter points and then 18 in the second to fall behind 40-22 at the halftime break.

The Raiders followed up with a 26-3 run in the third quarter to put the game well out of reach.

Eckstein finished with a game high 20 points for coach Maple’s crew. Kristoff was second on the team with seven points.

Tucker and Miller led the Raiders in scoring with 16 and 15 points respectively.

Oldenburg’s record now stands at 2-3 for the season.
